На одной из передовых шахт Донбасса испытывается новый угольный комбайн. Он оказался не вполне совершенным. Его конструктор Трофименко продолжает работать над улучшением агрегата. Почётный шахтёр Степан Недоля, молодой навалоотбойщик Вася Орлов, начальник шахты Горовой борются за внедрение новых, более передовых методов труда. В рядах шахтёров происходит перестройка: некоторым рабочим приходится уступать своё место более квалифицированным кадрам, другие едут на учёбу в институты, чтобы потом вернуться на родную шахту инженерами… Под заботливым надзором партии и правительства, представленных в картине лично тт. Сталиным, Ворошиловым, Маленковым и Молотовым, донецкие шахтёры уверенной поступью идут к коммунизму.
